Our careers are a huge part of our lives and they take up a lot of our time. The average person spends around 92,000 hours of their life working.

With so much time spent at work, it’s important that we actually enjoy the work we do. There’s nothing worse than dreading your work day and wishing the hours away.

If that feels familiar to you, it might be time to make a change. Is your job making you miserable? Or do you need a change of pace? A career change could be the best thing for you.

Read on for 10 signs that you may need a career change and get your life on the right track.

1. You Dread Going to Work

We all have had those days where we want an extra hour in bed instead of getting up for work. Those mornings where you actually consider quitting your job for a lie-in.

But if you’re always feeling that sense of dread when you have to go to work, you may need to change your career. If the very thought of going to work every day fills you with stress and dread, it’s not good for you. Stress has awful effects on your mind and body and can lead to health issues down the line.

If all you can think about is how much you hate your job, it’s time to start looking for a new one.

2. You’re Always Bored

You don’t have to hate your work to know it’s time to change your career. If you find that your work is mind-numbingly boring, that’s also a sign.

Of course, our jobs aren’t always the most exciting thing ever. But if you find everything you do there puts you in a zombie-like state, it can have huge effects. When you lose your passion and energy like this, it can bleed over into other areas of your life.

It may start affecting your personal relationships and your mental health. If you have something you’re passionate about, you could make a career out of it.

3. You Aren’t Growing

If your job makes you think “what am I doing with my life?” It could signal a need for change. A meaningful career ensures that you’re always growing and evolving to become better. But if you feel like you’ve gotten everything out of your job you can, it’s time to move on.

If your job is no longer offering you great opportunities to learn and grow, what’s the point in staying? If you can’t find a solution to this and if professional growth is important to you, find somewhere else to work.

4. You Don’t like the Culture

Working in a negative environment can turn an otherwise great job into an awful one. When you don’t trust the people you work with, it can affect your work performance.

If you find that your boss lies to you or your co-workers aren’t pleasant to be around, it might be time to leave. We all have people at work we don’t particularly like, but when it impacts your career is when it becomes serious.

Jobs with a high staff turnover rate can often have negative work cultures. If you decide to leave, make sure to do your research for the next job.

5. You Have Low Confidence

When you don’t enjoy the work you do, it can be easy to start thinking that you’re the problem. If everyone else there seems to enjoy their work, why aren’t you? Does it mean you’re bad at your job?

Your job doesn’t feel good, but that doesn’t mean it’s because you’re bad at it. It means it isn’t the right fit for you. Think about your dream career and how happy it would make you.

When you make moves to get on that career path, your confidence will soar as you’re doing something you love.

6. You’re Envious of Others’ Love of their Job

Have you ever been sat with friends, hearing them talk about their jobs and feeling that you want the same thing for yourself? Ever wanted them to be quiet so you don’t have to remember how much your job sucks?

Being envious of other people’s jobs can be a sign that you need to change it up for yourself. Find out what makes you envious and why.

Do you want a job where you get to travel? Do you want an outdoor job? Or do you want a job that helps people?

Find out which aspects you envy, and look into which jobs offer these. You may find a job you never knew existed and start living your dream!

7. You Don’t Feel Valued

Do you feel like you’re breaking your back for your company but get no appreciation? Are you bending over backward for it without any recognition? Does your boss expect you to work harder than others without any incentives?

If so, it’s tough to stay motivated at work.

You don’t need a pat on the back or a round of applause every time you do your job, of course. But if you’re going above and beyond without any professional praise, you don’t have to stay.

Don’t let your talent, dedication, and hard work be undervalued. There are plenty of other places that would be lucky to find a worker like you. Find an employer that will appreciate your dedication and reward you for it.

8. You’re Burnt Out

If you’re working insane hours every week and don’t have time to socialize, it’s not healthy. We’re conditioned to work a lot and have pride in our work ethic from an early age. But it’s not good when that becomes all you do with your time.

If you find that you have no time to see family or friends or even take part in hobbies, it’s a sign you need a change. Getting burnt out at work can impact your personal relationships and mental health in a big way.

If you can’t find a way to work fewer hours, you may need to jump ship. There is plenty of well-paying, part-time jobs that you could consider. Don’t let a job you don’t love consume your whole life. There are plenty of jobs that are fulfilling and don’t take up all your time.

9. You’ve Lost Your Passion

When we first start out in our career, many of us have a passion for it. Whether it’s the business side or creative aspects, there’s something that draws us in.

But when the passion is gone, what’s the point in staying?

Think about what drew you into it in the first place. Try to remember what your passions were and what they are now. If you find that they no longer apply to this job, you might need to change career path.

It’s okay to evolve as you advance in your career. But if what you once wanted is so very different from what you want now, there’s no shame in moving on. Find something that aligns with your passions, and make moves for that career.

10. Other People Worry About You

It can be difficult to leave our work stressed out and have to deal with our personal lives. When you hate your job, the people around you will notice. Your family and friends may have picked up on your negativity, and they’ll start to worry about you.

If you are always complaining or stressed, this will impact your relationships too. For your loved one’s sake as well as your own, changing career to do something you love can make things better.

If you no longer recognize the person you’ve become, start looking for a new job. No career is worth being miserable for. Your own health and relationships in life should be a priority.

A Career Change Could Transform Your Life

If these ten points resonate with you, it could be time for you to make a career change. Our jobs make up a large part of our lives and it doesn’t make sense to be miserable for them.

When you know it’s time to make a change, you can start to make moves for the next career. Do your research into which jobs would fulfill you and help you recapture your passion. When you start working at something you love, you’ll find that your life gets better as a result.
